Uhm, yeah. That was...er, something else.

So no big surprises in store -- the most surprising things were the things that didn't actually happen. No follow-up on the Deathstroke/GA confrontation, which I was expecting at least a hint of. Calculator's crew is still out there, depressingly. And the epilogue came off more than a little disturbing than sentimental, at least, to me.

There were a few nice moments -- Ollie and Wally were pretty good. And...uhm. Yeah. That's about it, really.

There's definitely a pallor over the DCU now -- if it bleeds into other titles, its depth, how its inhabitants react all remain to be seen (no, I read no industry news -- can you tell?), but there's a bit less gleam on the Silver Age now. And while it's modern and hip and current and edgy and all sorts of other buzzwords, I'm not sure it works for me.

It reminds me how perspectives can be so different. As someone who isn't that involved in the DCU (though I'm picking up more titles from there than ever as an adult collector), I enjoyed this. There were some nits to be picked, but it was a solid story that had me guessing. But it did make me sort of understand why people might tolerate Not Avengers if they had no history of reading the Avengers.

It wasn't annoying or bad, to me, but neither was it very good. It was ending with a whimper, which I guess is thematically appropriate, but the issue itself was unsatisfying. I enjoyed the series as a whole -- I think, though I'll have to retrace my steps just to make sure -- as it had plenty of character moments and enough history that I found myself at home. Though I canna wait to see [livejournal.com profile] querldox's take on it.

On the flip side, I did read "Avengers Disassembled," and as someone who's never had much love of the Avengers, I didn't hate it. I thought it was contrived in parts, occasionally far too convenient -- it struck me as bad ideas being executed interestingly. I really bought the characters, I guess, but the plot -- gah. Though I don't see myself glancing through Not Avengers (snort) anytime soon....

Oh, it was bad. I'll probably do a full listing of every STOOPID moment in it post-xmas as I leave tomorrow night for a week-plus in North Carolina and don't plan to take all seven issues with me, but there's a basic, glaring, fundamental problem with the whole story.

The murderer has no motive. The supposed motive given doesn't exist, as demonstrated in all relevant past appearances of the character. Not to mention that even if it did exist, the murderer has to be a complete whack job to even consider their initial plan as a reasonable and viable way of accomplishing their goal when there are several much simpler, better, more effective, and not involving physical assult, ways of doing so.
